Description
As a homeschool mom with a 9th grader of my own, I have realized pretty quickly just how high the stakes get as they hit high school. Suddenly, our students/homeschoolers are expected to reach out to co-op teachers, talk to college recruiters, or apply for that first part-time job—and they are expected to do it like professionals. I started calling it the “digital handshake” because, in many cases, that first email is the only impression people have of them. I created this A Digital Handshake: A Student’s/Homeschooler’s Guide to Professional Email guide because I wanted my own teen to have the confidence to hit “send” without second-guessing herself. This is not just another dry lesson on grammar; it is about giving our young adults a life skill that actually opens doors for them.

This A Digital Handshake: A Student’s/Homeschooler’s Guide to Professional Email guide dives deep into the practicalities, starting with the very basics of setting up a professional email address and crafting an impactful subject line. I walk students/homeschoolers through the “anatomy” of a perfect email, ensuring every message has a clear purpose and respectful tone. From knowing when to use a PDF versus a link, to understanding the subtle power of CC vs. BCC, I cover the technical foundations that prevent common pitfalls and ensure their message is always received and understood as intended. It is about empowering them with the tools to present themselves impeccably from the very first word.
Beyond the technicalities, “The Digital Handshake” tackles the real-world scenarios that often leave students feeling unsure or overwhelmed. It provides battle-tested templates for handling tricky situations, whether it is proactively communicating about a late assignment with accountability, mastering the delicate art of the follow-up without being pushy, or confidently reaching out to a professor for research opportunities. I also guide them through advanced etiquette, like understanding the “professional clock” for sending emails and using a “Brag Sheet” to secure glowing letters of recommendation. These are the soft skills that truly make a difference in their academic and early career journeys.
What makes this resource truly comprehensive is its focus on troubleshooting and safety. I address the common “Reply All” traps, explain the crucial distinction between when to email and when an in-person meeting is far more effective, and reinforce the vital “Cool-Down Rule” for managing emotionally charged communications. Crucially, the guide includes essential tips on digital privacy and why certain emails should never be sent from a mobile phone. Finished with a “Pre-Flight Checklist” for students/homeschoolers and a “Parent/Mentor Review Guide,” this resource ensures that every email sent is polished, professional, and reflects the incredible potential within each student/homeschooler.
At the end of the day, the A Digital Handshake: A Student’s/Homeschooler’s Guide to Professional Email is about more than just checking off a curriculum box; it is about watching our kids grow into independent, capable adults. I have all seen how easy it is for teens to stay stuck in “text-speak” mode, and my goal with this guide was to turn those hesitant texters into clear, confident communicators. Whether they are headed for college or straight into the workforce, I want our kids to be able to share their thoughts and needs with total professionalism. I truly hope this resource helps your student step into their future with their best foot forward.
